About Dr. Portia Travis
Dr. Portia Travis is the President of Dr. Portia Travis College of Nursing Assistant. Dr. Travis passion for nursing education led her to starting her own nursing college in 2022. Dr. Travis nursing education started while still in high school as a nursing assistant. She received her practical nursing certificate from Hinds Community College in 1990. She has also received an AAS degree from Hinds Community College in 1993; BSN degree from Mississippi College in 1995; MSN degree from Delta State University in 1998; and DNP degree from Samford University in Birmingham Alabama in 2016. In 2002 Dr. Travis became certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Dr. Travis has many years of experience as a nurse. Her diversified work experience includes caring for clients with various acute and chronic illnesses, from infants to the elderly. She has worked in long-term care, acute care settings, home health, mental health, clinics, and in corrections. Dr. Travis has also done work as a legal nurse consultant.
Dr. Travis’s is also a great speaker. She has presented at many venues such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Churches, Delta Kappa Gamma Tau Chapter, Mississippi Action for Progress, and at the Women in Higher Education Mississippi Network (WHEMN) annual conference. She has presented topics related to men, women, teen and pediatric health, influenza, sickle cell anemia, and human trafficking.
In 2004, Dr. Travis began her career a nurse educator as an instructor in the Generic Option of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Then in 2011, she became the Director of the Transition to RN option at Hinds Community College. She spent the next eleven years as the Director.

Program Mission
The mission of the nursing assistant program is to prepare students to become certified nursing assistants. Students will be taught utilizing various teaching and learning techniques that will enable them to provide high quality client/resident care in diverse settings.
