Program Description
The nursing assistant program prepares the graduate to perform in their role as a nurse aide providing care in diverse settings. Content includes the nursing assistant in long term care, resident care, understanding the resident/client, body systems and related conditions, confusion, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, nutrition and hydration and rehabilitation and restorative care. Basic nursing and personal care skills and procedures will be taught throughout the program.
The nursing assistant course is a hybrid course. It is a combination of in-person and online learning. Students will receive live lectures online using the Big Blue Button platform on Canvas. Skills practice will be face to face at the College.
Students will have dedicated learning lab hours for practicing basic nursing and personal care skills and procedures and dedicated clinical hours in a long-term care setting.
The program offers a day and evening option. Total program hours are 80, 64 lecture hours and 16 clinical hours.
Upon successful completion of the program the graduate will be eligible to take the Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination. Licensure is required to work in Mississippi as a nursing assistant.

Our Philosophy
At Dr. Portia Travis College of Nursing Assistant, we believe that the nursing assistant should possess qualities that promotes integrity, caring and compassion for all people; that the nurse educator should have a passion for teaching students and that each student is an individual with unique needs. We believe that the nurse educator has the responsibility to teach student with varied personalities, learning styles, special needs, and cultural diversity. In addition, we believe that the nurse educator must have academic and clinical experience necessary to prepare the student for their role. Students should be prepared to meet the healthcare needs of clients/residents using a holistic approach respecting their cultural, ethnic, and personal beliefs. We believe that the nurse educator and the student should know that effective Communication by the giver and receiver of information results in positive outcomes.
